French insurance giant Axa has agreed to purchase a 51% stake in Italian direct insurance group Prima for €500 million (equivalent to $571 million), aiming to strengthen its foothold in Italy’s motor insurance sector.

Headquartered in Milan, Prima also operates in Spain and the UK. It generated €1.25 billion in premiums in Italy last year and held around a 10% share of the country’s retail motor insurance market.
